Last week, the second-ever National Maker Faire<\/a> was held at the White House in Washington DC. \u00a0Shapeways crew members, Vicky Somma<\/a> and John Fitzpatrick<\/a>, were live on the scene on behalf of the Shapeways team. Let\u2019s hear what our team members had to say about the experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe great thing about Maker Faires is that someone responds to almost every design on the table. \u00a0That said, my impression is moving\/interlocking parts seemed to stand out (completely understandable\u2014they are so interactive). \u00a0The cast metals are, of course, captivating (being shiny and all). \u00a0The porcelain provided a great wow factor because it bucks people\u2019s perceptions of what can be done (\u201cThat opens a lot of doors\u201d, one woman said). \u00a0And a sleeper favorite- the Escher Knot (by designer ShapeKays<\/a>) got a lot of positive attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/a><\/p>\n

Of course, 3D printing isn\u2019t just for adults. It can be an amazingly engaging tool to get kids excited, as our crew member experienced while in DC.<\/p>\n

\u201c I underestimated the moving part Jack-O-Lantern and John\u2019s moving part Decision Maker. \u00a0John also brought some home prints in a UV-sensitive filament. Kids enjoyed running those to the sunshine and watch them change colors. \u00a0Squeezing the elasto plastic seemed fun as well. Oh and the full color sandstone proved to be resilient. \u00a0I watched kids vigorously shake the Schrodinger\u2019s Cat in his box (I could be calm about it because I\u2019ve seen it survive my three year old).\u201d<\/p>\n
