I&#8217;ve always felt the elvish writing system from Lord of the Rings was pretty, and was delighted to find that it is actually a working writing system. It was the first design I ever uploaded to Shapeways, and it remains my sentimental favorite.<\/p>\n<p>The real surprise was my &#8220;Modern Art D3\/3-Sided Die.&#8221; I designed it on a whim because the idea came to me in a dream. I think it took about two hours to build a few versions of the model and decide on one that I liked. I uploaded the design and expected nothing from it. It was, after all, a throwaway idea. Imagine my surprise when it almost immediately went super-viral and became my top seller! To this day, I&#8217;ve sold more of that die than any other model. There was so much demand on social media that I ended up making a five-piece set using the same aesthetic. I may eventually return to that idea and make a few more.<\/p>\n<p>I try to make dice and other products that I, as a huge nerd, would want to own. The defining characteristic of nerds is that we unapologetically and whole heartedly love things. They&#8217;re my favorite demographic to serve, and my favorite demographic in general. I wouldn&#8217;t have it any other way.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"625\" height=\"652\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allowtransparency src=\"\/\/www.shapeways.com\/fragments\/product?spin=QDVP8F2Q5\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Walk us through the iteration process of a product.<\/em><br \/>\nThe most intense iteration process I&#8217;ve been through so far was with my elvish dice. I wanted them to be as delicate as possible to maintain the proper &#8220;elf-ness&#8221; while not being to delicate to roll. My initial designs were too fragile so I gradually bulked them up until I hit proper balance. I think I have about 80 hours of design work into the D20 from that set, and at least 6 hours into each of the others.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, my modern art dice are all one-shot models. I have a maximum of about two hours of into each of those models and they all worked perfectly on the first shot. Just goes to show that sometimes the best ideas don&#8217;t have to be complicated!<\/p>\n<p><em>Would it be possible to create these products without the use of 3D printing? If so, what are the advantages of 3D printing it?<\/em><br \/>\nPossible? Maybe. Accesible to me, as a humble 3D designer? Never. I rave about Shapeways making 3D printing accessible to everyone (<em>editor&#8217;s note: Thank you, Ian!<\/em>). It sounds cheesy, but it really has changed my life. The ability to market straight to consumers without having to bulk order or hold stock is perfect for me.<\/p>\n<p>The advantage is that 3D printing allows for the creating of objects that standard manufacturing equipment would struggle to produce due to complex negative space or architecture. My only limits are my own imagination and the dev team&#8217;s patience with my boundary-pushing models.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"625\" height=\"652\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allowtransparency src=\"\/\/www.shapeways.com\/fragments\/product?spin=PL39ALZZ3\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>What has customer feedback been like?<\/em><br \/>\nTabletop gaming fans are the best, and they seem to like my dice. I get regular PMs about them, and the social media response has been overwhelming. I have even had requests to make certain dice available in precious materials because customers want to give them as jewelry to their significant others. I&#8217;ve left these options open, and I still occasionally get orders for them.<\/p>\n<p><em>When did you realize you had created something really special?<\/em><br \/>\nWhen the &#8220;Modern Art D3\/3-Sided Die&#8221; got huge on social media. I really didn&#8217;t see it coming. It was the product that established me as a dice designer, and I wish I could somehow thank the internet as a whole for making it happen.<\/p>\n<p><em>Can you tell us about your next project?<\/em><br \/>\nI&#8217;m actually working on some products related to Magic: The Gathering. I don&#8217;t want to reveal too much, but let&#8217;s just say that you&#8217;ll never look at tokens the same way again. My initial designs were rejected for being too delicate, so I&#8217;m still very much in the iteration process.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"625\" height=\"652\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allowtransparency src=\"\/\/www.shapeways.com\/fragments\/product?spin=8UHWWFFS5\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>What is your favorite thing about 3D printing?\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\nMy favorite thing about 3D printing is how much it has allowed me to translate my ideas into reality. As a person with an active imagination, it&#8217;s made me give more credit to the crazy ideas that pop into my head and actually consider modeling them instead of just forgetting about them.
