Michael Weinberg: Shapeways General Counsel and IP Expert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi Shapeways!\u00a0 I\u2019m excited to be joining the team as the new IP and General Counsel around here. \u00a03D printing is obviously amazing for all sorts of reasons, and one of those is how it gives people an opportunity to rethink their relationship to intellectual property law.\u00a0 3D printed objects and files do not fit as neatly into intellectual property law as things like music and movies.\u00a0 This gives the 3D printing community a chance to redefine the relationship between creativity, creation, and intellectual property law (among so many other things).\u00a0 Law certainly has an important role, but a healthy community does not rely on law alone in order to thrive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-02-at-11.33.14-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20457\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-04-02 at 11.33.14 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Screen-Shot-2015-04-02-at-11.33.14-AM.png\" past few years, I\u2019ve been working on public interest technology policy at Public Knowledge.\u00a0 While there, I wrote a few whitepapers\u00a0on 3D printing and intellectual property law:\u00a0:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.publicknowledge.org\/files\/docs\/3DPrintingPaperPublicKnowledge.pdf\">It Will Be Awesome if They Don&#8217;t Screw It Up<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.publicknowledge.org\/files\/What's%20the%20Deal%20with%20Copyright_%20Final%20version2.pdf\">What&#8217;s The Deal with Copyright and 3D Printing<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.publicknowledge.org\/assets\/uploads\/documents\/3_Steps_for_Licensing_Your_3D_Printed_Stuff.pdf\">3 Steps for Licensing Your 3D Printed Stuff<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0I also helped to organize\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/3ddc-2015-tickets-16002505926\">3D\/DC<\/a>, an annual 3D printing policy conference in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m excited to join Shapeways and to try and put some of the ideas I have been working on for the past few years into practice.\u00a0 As the leading 3D printing service and marketplace, Shapeways is uniquely positioned to help establish and model the ways in which we interact with the 3D printed world.\u00a0 Doing things right here at Shapeways means proving to the world that we can avoid some of the fights that have held back new technologies in the past.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/white-papers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-20453\" alt=\"white papers\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/white-papers-386x500.jpg\" width=\"386\" (max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Shapeways already has a track record of doing things right.\u00a0 We have partnered with Hasbro to create <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/archives\/16759-hasbro-shapeways-enable-3d-printing-fan-art-with-superfanart.html\">SuperFanArt<\/a> and pioneer a new model for collaboration between existing IP holders and their most devoted fans.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We have also taken a community-first approach to defining and implementing our content policy in order to make sure that Shapeways works for the Shapeways community.<\/p>\n<p>I know that these great initiatives are just the beginning.\u00a0 The best thing for Shapeways and the Shapeways community is to create a space that works for everyone.\u00a0 That means respecting rights and creativity, and encouraging experimentation and new models.\u00a0 It also means continuing to be strong advocates on behalf of 3D printing and the 3D printing community.\u00a0 We\u2019re still at the beginning of this process, and look forward to continuing to develop new methods of fueling creativity in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, part of trying new things is sometimes getting things wrong.\u00a0 Fortunately, the best way to respond when you are getting something wrong is to make it right.\u00a0 In that spirit, if you see us doing
