{"id":17437,"date":"2014-08-26T16:52:33","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T16:52:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/?p=17437"},"modified":"2017-04-17T12:42:01","modified_gmt":"2017-04-17T16:42:01","slug":"the-first-desktop-sls-3d-printer-now-on-kickstarter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/the-first-desktop-sls-3d-printer-now-on-kickstarter","title":{"rendered":"The First Desktop SLS 3D Printer Now on Kickstarter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have seen many FDM 3D Printers, a couple of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/archives\/1704-with-3-days-to-go-on-kickstarter-formlabs-has-raised-2-3-million.html\" target=\"_blank\">SLA <\/a>and even a few DLP 3D printers launch on Kickstarter, now the first of the <a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/106483\/3d-printing-will-explode-in-2014-thanks-to-the-expiration-of-key-patents\/\" target=\"_blank\">much awaited SLS machines<\/a> are starting to test the ravenous market for 3D printers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/1812935123\/ice1-and-ice9-the-first-low-budget-sls-3d-printers?ref=card\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17439\" alt=\"DIY SLS 3D Printer on Kickstarter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/norge-3D-printer-625x349.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"349\" data-wp-pid=\"17439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/norge-3D-printer-625x349.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/norge-3D-printer-400x223.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/norge-3D-printer.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) is the core technology behind our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/materials\/strong-and-flexible-plastic?li=nav\" target=\"_blank\">3D Printed Nylon<\/a> (white strong &amp; flexible) 3D printing at Shapeways, one of our most popular materials. \u00a0The SLS process is by far the most versatile as the powder surrounding a sintered part acts as support material, so you can make complex, interlocking parts, with overhanging parts, cantilevers, holes in multiple directions, and hinged parts fully assembled, the excess powder is then brushed and blown away to reveal the part. \u00a0No nasty support material or structures to deal with. \u00a0In short, it is an incredibly versatile process.<\/p>\n<p>The process is called Sintering, because the layer of powder is heated up to just below melting point, the laser then follows and melts the powder turning it into a solid, without it going to liquid form first. \u00a0This helps to control the material warpage and thermal shock so the 3D prints are accurate and strong.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/1812935123\/ice1-and-ice9-the-first-low-budget-sls-3d-printers?ref=card\">Ice 1 &amp; Ice 9 by Norge Systems<\/a> may be the first SLS 3D printer available at a price that is affordable for a small design firm at just over $8,000 USD at current exchange rates for the smaller Ice 1 on Kickstarter which has a Build volume: 200x200x250 mm Layer thickness: 0.1 &#8211; 0.15mm. \u00a0Not Shabby. \u00a0The Ice 9 promises a\u00a0Build volume: 300x300x450 mm at a price point closer to $35,000 USD.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/98841406\" height=\"281\" width=\"500\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/98841406\">Ice9, the first low budget 3D SLS printer!<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/norgeltd\">Norge Ltd<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To temper excitement, (oh, and I am VERY excited) the units are proposed to ship in December 2015 which is quite a wait if you have dropped $8,000 as a backer, coupled with the tendency for hardware on Kickstarter to ship late. \u00a0The video shows the printer in action, but does not show the printed part as <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/102918902\" target=\"_blank\">traced by the laser<\/a>, they do <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/98841406\" target=\"_blank\">show a different 3D printed part being<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1bmTiBWp0No\">pulled from the powder<\/a> so perhaps the machine is not quite fully functional yet.<\/p>\n<p>If you have the cash and patience I would really love to see this unit hit the market so please do support this project and the designers behind it. \u00a0Meanwhile there seems to be another play flirting with the desktop (ok, maybe a little big for your actual desk) market with an <a href=\"http:\/\/sintratec.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">eerily similar logo to Norge<\/a>.
