{"id":17379,"date":"2014-08-20T22:24:55","date_gmt":"2014-08-20T22:24:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/?p=17379"},"modified":"2017-04-17T12:42:01","modified_gmt":"2017-04-17T16:42:01","slug":"3d-printing-material-torture-test-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/3d-printing-material-torture-test-fire","title":{"rendered":"3D Printing Material Torture Test &#8211; FIRE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever wondered what would happen if you set fire to your 3D prints? \u00a0Yeah, me too.<\/p>\n<p>Following is a video of a quick flame test of five of shapeways core 3D printing materials including Alumide, Acrylic (FUD + Detail) , Full Color Sandstone, and Nylon (WSF). \u00a0Watch this 3 minute video to see how each of these materials reacts to a quick encounter with a blow torch.\u00a0Please do not try this at home.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/imE-55Yq6NE?rel=0\" height=\"360\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nA little surprisingly the Alumide was the first to melt down like a powdery napalm candle. \u00a0Both of the Acrylics (both of which are UV cured resins) caught fire super easily and burnt steadily emitting a terrible odor. \u00a0The full color sandstone did not really want to stay alight with this geometry. \u00a0It is actually the\u00a0Cyanoacrylate (super glue (Kragle)) final sealing process that really burns in the full color prints, I tried other prints that had not been dipped in\u00a0Cyanoacrylate and they would not stay alight at all. \u00a0Finally the Nylon caught fire but did not maintain the flame for very long. \u00a0In other geometries I have seen the Nylon keep alight for longer, again dripping like napalm whilst still on fire.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, these materials are in no way resistant to fire, keep them away from naked flames as it will most likely result in a hot dripping, smelly mess.<\/p>\n<p>I will share more videos of each of the materials with different geometries so you can see in detail how each material reacts.<\/p>\n<p>And, what material torture test would you like to see next?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever wondered what would happen if you set fire to your 3D prints? \u00a0Yeah, me too.
