{"id":1708,"date":"2012-10-23T14:36:34","date_gmt":"2012-10-23T14:36:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/archives\/1708-found-in-the-forums-a-pat-on-the-back-and-insight-into-the-complexities-of-3d-printing-at-scale.html"},"modified":"2014-07-03T17:23:01","modified_gmt":"2014-07-03T17:23:01","slug":"found-in-the-forums-a-pat-on-the-back-and-insight-into-the-complexities-of-3d-printing-at-scale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/found-in-the-forums-a-pat-on-the-back-and-insight-into-the-complexities-of-3d-printing-at-scale","title":{"rendered":"Found in the Forums : A Pat on the Back and Insight into the Complexities of 3D Printing at Scale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We work really hard at <a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Shapeways<\/a> to get your 3D prints to you as quickly and cheaply as possible with the best possible quality 3D printing available. &nbsp;Occasionally&nbsp;we run late on some materials due to machine malfunctions, sometimes a parcel get&#8217;s lost by UPS and we even have old fashioned human error mess things up, but we will always correct our mistakes and continue to try to give you the best possible service. &nbsp;Anyone who has used digital manufacturing technologies knows it is not always easy, anyone who has tried to do a large run in a school, fab lab or industrial complex knows this makes it even more complex when dealing with multiple machines, file types and level of experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recently <a href=\"\/forum\/index.php?t=msg&amp;goto=55779&amp;#msg_55779\" target=\"_blank\">BVR posted a quick message in the forums<\/a> that made our hearts sing that we wanted to share with you all:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; border: none; padding: 0px; \"><p><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em>Today I spent the entire afternoon in my local<br \/>\n university&#8217;s 3d printing lab. They have 2 different 3d printers, 1 is a<br \/>\n Zcorp color powder based machine, 1 dimension abs printer, a 5 axis cnc<br \/>\n and a cnc router, 2 50W CO2 lasers and a next 3d scanner.<\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/><\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/>\nAfter watching the staff deal with build table cleaning, print head<br \/>\ncleaning, part cleaning, wrong type of material in the lasers, incorrect<br \/>\n part fixturing in the cnc&#8217;s, memory addressing errors on the 3d<br \/>\nscanner, incorrect file types, corrupt files, files missing textures,<br \/>\nnon-mani files and a slew of other issues.<br \/><\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/>\nAll on a much much smaller scale than Shapeways&#8230;the staff of Shapeways<br \/>\n should be commended for getting the volume of work done that they do!!!<\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/><\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/>\nAnyone who has a hard time understanding why your model might not be<br \/>\nquite perfect should go see a 3d print house and just stand around and<br \/>\nwatch what goes on!<\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/><\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/>\nI have a much better understanding of the complexities involved with<br \/>\nthis industry, going in the shop to machine my parts is a cakewalk by<br \/>\ncomparison.<\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/><\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/>\nI have been told I can come in anytime and print my own items, guess<br \/>\nwhat, I will still send my files to Shapeways. It is far easier to just<br \/>\nsend my files in and get my finished items shipped right to me!<\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/><\/em><\/span><span class=\"MsgBodyText\"><em><br \/>\nThanks again Shapeways for making this all so easy!<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thank you <a href=\"\/designer\/bvr\" target=\"_blank\">BVR<\/a>, we will continue to work really hard to
