Can we really 3D print metal just like we do with White<br \/>\nStrong and Flexible now? Well, yes<\/font><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"> and no. 3D printing in metal (or<br \/>\ndirect metal printing) is not as accessible a technology as the<br \/>\nregular 3D printing technologies that we use <!-- s9ymdb:345 -->at Shapeways at the moment.<br \/>\nThe material that is used is also more <\/font><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">expensive, because it is a<br \/>\nTitanium alloy. The machines and the process itself are much more<br \/>\nexpensive also. Just how expensive? To give you an indication: we<br \/>\nestimate that the contest winners prize(which can be 10 cubic<br \/>\ncentimeters)will cost us around $1000 to $2000 depending on its size!<br \/>\nTo top it all off there are design rules that you will have to follow<br \/>\nwhen designing for 3D metal printing. Check out the half scale Light Poem in Titanium to the right.&nbsp;<\/font>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">We are<br \/>\nnot offering metal as a material right now; however this is a unique<br \/>\nopportunity: your unique object 3D printed in titanium. As far as we<br \/>\nknow you will be amongst the first people ever to be able to have<br \/>\nyour own personal design made and then 3D printed in titanium. There<br \/>\nare some companies out there using the technology, but even their<br \/>\nusage is rather limited and direct access to these machines?
