My name is Marleen and since June I became a team member of<br \/>\nShapeways. I am responsible for finance. I have a quite diverse<br \/>\nbackground that combines logistics and operations in paper<br \/>\nmanufacturing with<!-- s9ymdb:256 --> strategic advice and mergers &amp; acquisitions. I<br \/>\nhave always wanted to be an entrepreneur and Shapeways is the perfect<br \/>\nplace for me where Internet, production and lots of hard and fun work<br \/>\ncomes together.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">Some weeks ago I was contacted by Hans<br \/>\nvan de Burgt working at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tno.nl\/content.cfm?&amp;context=markten&amp;content=case&amp;laag1=181&amp;item_id=625&amp;Taal=2\">TNO<\/a>,<br \/>\nand secretary of<u> <\/u><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">the<br \/>\nBeneluxspoor.net foundation<\/span>. This foundation runs several<br \/>\nwebsites for model train enthusiasts and her objective is to spread<br \/>\nthe passion and fun of the model train hobby in the Benelux(Belgium,<br \/>\nThe Netherlands <a class=\"serendipity_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/Dg_151.jpg\"><!-- s9ymdb:254 --><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"72\" width=\"110\" style=\"border: 0px none ; float: right; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/Dg_151-150x150.jpg\"><\/a><a class=\"serendipity_image_link\" href=\"\/blog\/uploads\/Dg_16.jpg\"><!-- s9ymdb:255 --><\/a>and Luxembourg). Hans and his fellow model train<br \/>\nfriend Karst Drenth- who happens to be one of <i>the&nbsp;<\/i> <a class=\"serendipity_image_link\" href=\"\/blog\/uploads\/Dg_15.jpg\"><!-- s9ymdb:254 --><\/a>specialists<br \/>\nin the Netherlands in building handmade model trains out of<br \/>\n&lsquo;plotter-cut&rsquo; styrene &ndash; wanted to test whether 3d printing<br \/>\ncould be a feasible option for all model train hobbyists.&nbsp;<font color=\"#000000\"><font size=\"3\"><\/font><\/font>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">The great thing about 3D printing for<br \/>\nmodel trains, is that it cuts back the amount of time of building a<br \/>\ntrain from 3 months to just a few days. This makes it fun for so many<br \/>\nmore people than just the small group that has a lot of patience. In<br \/>\naddition, it makes customized models affordable \ud83d\ude42 !<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">I immediately liked the idea, and<br \/>\nbecause I have worked in the past for a train network operator (the<br \/>\nREAL trains) I have an interest in anything to do with trains. Karst,<br \/>\nHans and I decided to print a scaled <u>carriage<\/u> in the materials<br \/>\nthat Shapeways currently offers. We learned a lot from this exercise.<br \/>\nThe train hobby demands <a class=\"serendipity_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/Dg_161.jpg\"><!-- s9ymdb:255 --><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"81\" width=\"110\" style=\"border: 0px none ; float: right; padding-left: 5px; padding-right: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/Dg_161-150x150.jpg\"><\/a>a very high level of detail and easy<br \/>\nfinishing with sanding, spray painting and gluing. The material that<br \/>\nright now suits well, is our White Detail but we are determined to<br \/>\ntake it even a step further; so keep checking our material pages. In<br \/>\nthe near future we will place an interview with Karst on this blog to<br \/>\nshare all the details and photos of our tests.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">I was honored to be invited by Hans and<br \/>\nKarst to visit Eurospoor 2008, which is a convention for the model<br \/>\ntrain hobby. The Beneluxspoor.net Foundation had a huge stand with<br \/>\nenthusiasts that are specialized in the electronics, scenery, model<br \/>\ntrain building and so on. It was great to be there, share ideas and<br \/>\nto learn that 3D manufacturing can be a solution for many<br \/>\nenthusiasts. Hans, Karst and me have lot&rsquo;s of great ideas to<br \/>\ninspire, help and enable the model train community.
