Band of Misfits<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- s9ymdb:15679 --><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/scitech\/2012\/01\/21\/tech-and-moves-3d-printing-brings-new-angle-to-animation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"serendipity_image_center\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/ThePiratesanimation.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 40px; border-top-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-width: initial; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; \"><p><em>\u201cWe built about 8,000 mouths,\u201d key animator Ian Whitlock said,<br \/>\nexplaining how he brought the various characters to life in an unusually<br \/>\nshort time. \u201cFor the Pirate Captain model, we made 257 separate mouths.<br \/>\nFor someone like <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/topics\/science\/charles-darwin.htm#r_src=ramp\"><span style=\"color: #000099; \"><em>Charles Darwin<\/em><\/span><\/a><em>, we probably had about 130 mouths.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here we see Aardman embracing the power of the 3D printer to print complexity for free, with traditional production, each&nbsp;separate&nbsp;mouth would have had to be produced from scratch, but with 3D printing the animators could use 3D modeling software to create the mouth, then make minor variations to get a range of facial forms, then 3D print the entire batch.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 40px; border-top-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-width: initial; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; \"><p><em><\/em><em style=\"font-size: 14px; \">\u201cWhen the mouths are printed out, they\u2019re<br \/>\nsort of a flesh color. It\u2019s the same technology used to create hearing<br \/>\naides. They have about 14 different skin tones \u2026 once it\u2019s done, we sand<br \/>\nit and paint it.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interestingly they must have used monochromatic 3D printing such as <a href=\"\/materials\/white_strong_flexible\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laser sintering<\/a> instead of <a href=\"\/materials\/fullcolor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full color 3d printing<\/a> possibly to get higher resolution. &nbsp;We are bound to see more and more 3D printing used in animation, from the high end Aardman&#8217;s to the DIY animators doing shorts in their living room.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/scitech\/2012\/01\/21\/tech-and-moves-3d-printing-brings-new-angle-to-animation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><font size=\"1\">Via FoxNews&nbsp;<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, not as bad as it may first sound.
