Solving Problems Through Product Design on Skillshare

Posted by in 3D Modeling, Classes

This summer we introduced a Skillshare class that went over the basics of using Shapeways to create and sell your designs. Those videos focused on the ins and outs of merchandising your shop, creating a product line and using social media to get the most engagement from current and potential customers. Today, we’re introducing a new class that takes a step back and focuses on the process of actually creating a product.

3D Printing: Solving Problems Through Product Design delves into the basics of creating a product – from finding inspiration in everyday things to the importance of prototyping. Lauren takes you through the steps of her own design process in creating a product that can hold her Metrocard and headphones.

Whether it’s deciding what software to use to design with, or figuring out the best material for the first print there are a lot of little decisions you have to make when creating a design. These videos will help you plan for those, and hopefully make your process much easier.

Shapeways Global Meetups in Athens, Greece

On Oct 2nd, 2015 Shapeways hosted it’s 4th community meetup in Athens, Greece with the Athens School of Fine Arts. The Meetup took place at the amazing Circuits and Currents Project Space where local designers, students,  and academics, including members from the Museum of Paleontology all came together to participate in the Shapeways Athens meetup.

We had a whopping turn out of over 250+ people for the Shapeways Meetup in Athens – we had our crew members give presentations discussing 3D printing material, 3D software, and a crash-course on how to use the Shapeways website.

Class: Designing jewelry for 3D printing

When we go to events around the world and show off the amazing products the Shapeways community creates, it’s a sure bet that people will lose their minds over the creativity and beauty of the jewelry being showcased. From rings to bracelets, designers can create unique pieces you won’t be able to find anywhere else!

While we meet a lot of jewelry designers, we also meet people who are interested in trying their hand at creating 3D printed jewelry and we get a lot of questions about how they can learn. So for those of you who would like to learn more, definitely consider taking this online course led by Shapeways shop owner, Paul Liaw.

Class benefits:

  • Weekly videos that you can watch at your convenience
  • Project based homework, along with personal feedback from the instructor
  • Weekly live Q&A with instructor + live deoms
  • Discount from Shapeways on your first jewelry print
  • And much more!

Paul was a recent guest speaker at our weekly Google Hangout Live. Check out the video below for a little preview of what he’ll be teaching:

Computational Fashion Masterclass: 3D Printing Connects Developers and Fashion Designers

Eyebeam Art and Technology Center and Shapeways, in partnership with NYU MAGNET space in downtown Brooklyn, graduated the first group of Computational Fashion Masterclass students this July.

One group of students chose to mimc the biomechanisms of sharkskin.

Core instructors Casey Rehm and Bradley Rothenberg inundated the participants with intensive generative and pattern making code strategies in programs like Processing, Python for Rhino and Grasshopper.

The course was a unique opportunity for creatives from different industries to come together and develop cutting edge garments that push the limits of additive manufacturing technology. The students came from various backgrounds including interaction design, fashion design, and engineering. Shapeways community member and master of the meme, Ryan Kittleson was on hand to teach freehand digital sculpting. Lisa Kori provided an introduction to digital flat pattern generation from her OpenFit project.

During the course instructors and students addressed different design topics around the customization capabilities of 3D printing and how they lend themselves readily to creating one-of-a-kind yet mass-producable garments. Students had access to the bountiful materials and fashion tech resource in NYC and got feedback from fashion designer Gabi Asfour of threeASFOUR. The finished designs are currently in production at our factory and will be on display during Fashion Week in NYC this coming September.

Computational Fashion is an Eyebeam initiative bringing together artists, designers, scientists, and technologists with the fashion industry to explore emerging ideas and develop new work at the intersection of fashion and technology and is supported in part by The Rockefeller Foundation Cultural Innovation Fund.

New 3D Printing and Modeling Class for Kids

Posted by in Classes

Kids are our future. And that’s why we at Shapeways strongly support enriching young minds with Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math—otherwise known as STE(A)M.

As part of the STE(A)M initiative, we’ve partnered with Youth Digital, a company who provides online technology classes for kids, to offer the 3D Printing & Modeling 1 class.

Through this class, kids will learn:

  • The basics of popular 3D modeling software Blender
  • How to create a robot from scratch and bring it to life through 3D printing

Learning to model robots is great way for kids to get the hang of 3D modeling. And since the course is just three parts (about 20 minutes each), they shouldn’t have a problem staying focused.
The class is designed for kids ages 8 to 14, but really anyone can learn from it! So whether you want to keep the kids busy, enrich their minds, or even use this as a creative bonding experience while you learn alongside them, this is an awesome class to check out.
You can get an introduction to this course with three lessons on our tutorials page and if you’re interested in the full 12-part course with Youth Digital, they’re offering Shapies a 30% discount through July. Just use code: Shapeways30 when you sign up here!
