Shapeways Educational Discount for 3D Printing on a Student Budget

UPDATE: Discount has been increased to 15% off for registered students and faculty. Please see our Education Program page for additional updates.

Today we have launched the first stage of the Shapeways Educational Program with an awesome 10% discount on 3D printing for all students and educators with a Shapeways account registered with an .edu email address.

Shapeways student discount 3D printing

This is our first step at helping students and educators have better access to high quality 3D printing through Shapeways.  We will be rolling out more features as part of the Shapeways Education Program so that everyone from elementary to post graduate students can use 3D printing to help them learn, understand and communicate their ideas whether they be technical, artistic or conceptual.

Register for the 10% discount on all 3D printing by visiting the Shapeways Education page and activating your email.  The 10% discount will automatically be applied at checkout unless you have another discount code you wish to enter.  You can still use Shapeways credit and your student discount at the same time.

We will continuously monitor and review the educational discount so that we can optimize it to students needs which may involve a change in the terms under which we offer the discount.  We will keep all of those registered for the education discount updated on any changes and/or additions to the program.  We will also work to include other educational institutions that do not have an .edu domain for their emails in the near future.

Please pass on the details of the discount to your friends, fellow students and teachers, the more people that are registered and use the educational discount, the more incentive there is for Shapeways to develop the educational program further.

If you have any other ideas you would like to see implemented into the Shapeways educational program please email

I have a school email address ending with can I use this? I am 16 and currently go to a secondary school in the UK

  2. Thomas

Dont have a .edu either, all students from the Technical university of Delft dont.
We have …, please include this in the next update!
(I’v filled in the form you link to Duann)

    1. Duann

      Thanks Thomas,

The more people that fill out that for the more incentive to activate more domains.

Please forward this to your entire school and we will get this activated sooner than later. (Yes, the entire school)

    2. Thomas

Forwarding a service that isn’t functional yet isn’t verry effective in my opinion.

When is available (should be easy to confirm its student adres from your eindhoven office) ill post this on IDE facebook group of Industrial design engineering TuDelft.

    3. Duann

      Thanks Thomas,

I have passed on your opinion to our product team.

I know that has a database with known educational extensions and with registering they instantly know what institution your studying at.
Might be good to work on such a datatase with the users imput?

And I have another question, what if you are alredy registered with another account?

  3. matthew katzenstein

my college email ends with and when i try to send the activation email i get a yellow bar with an alert _/!\_ symbol in it and nothing comes up in my email
is it because there are multiple extentions to the address?

    1. Duann

      Oh no!!!

I will check with the dev team to see if there is any issues with that.

    1. Robert Jeffery

      The same problem for RMIT.
I’m a student at RMIT Melbourne and all our e-mails end with

P.S. Love your work Henry. I’ve been following your channel on youtube for a few months now.

  4. Tom Busscher

But what if I replace my email under my shapeways account settings with an edu email? Would that work too?

  5. Nick

Aw man! Ordered nearly €400 worth of prototypes in the last month… could have done with this earlier :(

Also, I’m at university in UK, we only use email addresses.

  6. Callum

Is this valid for elementary and high school students?

  7. js

Does retrofitting our accounts with an .edu address work as well? Wish I would have known this sooner. I have been registered with my personal email for 3 years now.

    1. Duann

      Hey Tom,

That will work if you update the email in your account then register on the education page, we have only just enabled this discount so you have not missed out on this.

Please do pass on the details to everyone you know to and enter their domain in the spreadsheet via this form the more people that register the sooner we will integrate it.

  8. Francesco De Comité

Looks like only US schools have an address in edu, right ?
Do you plan something for people elsewhere in the world ?

  9. Glenn

Seems like Shapeways opened up a whole can of worms with this one…

“Only U.S. postsecondary institutions that are institutionally accredited by an agency on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies (see recognized accrediting bodies) may obtain an Internet name in the .edu domain. These include both “Regional Institutional Accrediting Agencies” and “National Institutional and Specialized Accrediting Bodies” recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Note that institutional accreditation is required for .edu eligibility; program accreditation is not sufficient. Not all agencies accredit institutions. Some accredit only institutions, some accredit only programs, and others accredit both institutions and programs.”

    1. Duann

      Hi Glenn,

This was a can of worms we were expecting and are prepared for, we just needed to gauge interest and use this feedback to allocate resources to make this happen.

The more people that go to and enter their domain in the spreadsheet via this form the sooner we will integrate it.

I know it is not optimal, but please pass this on to all students and educators so that we can get this spread beyond the US as soon as possible.

      Thanks again
