3D model printability checks — automated and manual
Your Shapeways product is unique by design. So unique that we perform individual checks to ensure every new product can successfully be 3D Printed and manufactured. Following a combination of automated and manual printability checks, your product is brought to life.
When you upload a new 3D model to Shapeways, our software analyzes it automatically. Our automated checks test the following design guidelines:
- Wall Thickness
- Bounding Box Size (maximum and minimum)
- Model Density
- Model Integrity (we also fix broken geometry when possible)
Each material and post-processing technique has its own structural limit based on the machines used. Materials that are not available following automated checks will have a red “X“ next to the material name along with an explanation as to why the model is not printable in that material.
After you add your new product to your cart and check out, our Quality Engineers get to work. They individually analyze your 3D model and ensure we can successfully 3D Print in the material you've chosen.
Our manual checks test the following design guidelines:
- Wall Thickness
- Wire Thickness
- Detailed parts will show up after printing
- All pieces are properly connected
- Amount and size of escape holes for support materials
- Interlocking parts don’t melt together
- Separate parts have enough clearance
- Meets our content policy
If we find problems with your design, we will immediately let you know and do our best to give you information regarding how to fix it. Our Customer Service team will also work with you to resolve any printability issues so you can hold your product in your hands as quickly as possible!
We can’t wait to see what you create!
