Although never built, Air Defense Command originally wanted almost 500 to defend the United States. North American Aviation proposed adopting it as an escort to the B-70 Valkyrie bomber.

The Flanker-C is a supermaneuverable, multi-role fighter capable of ten-hour, all-weather, air-to-air and air-to-surface deep-interdiction missions.
