The little glass cubes on the arms are to ensure that the cacti this cactus is made from do not grow higher than two blocks.

I had to do it, take the 3D printer made in Minecraft, shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldiISyKkGl8, and export it as a printable 3D model. Can you get more meta? That said, if you actually printed this thing out you'd be $419.34 poorer and end up with 66 separate parts: a lot of the bits are not physically connected to the main assembly, even after doing "weld" and "corner tip" tests in Mineways. Still, fun to show here.

A slice of the spawn area of our world, Vokselia, http://vokselia.com, this time without the deep underground train station. For stability, I made this slice two blocks thick, at 2 mm a block, so the "supported wall thickness" should be 4 mm - plenty. This is a very long model, almost at the limits of what the printer can do.

This is a test of a pixel art build from this webpage (with permission from the creator). I thought I'd give it a try, since making 2D pixel images is a common Minecraft pasttime. I made this one 3 mm thick, making it noticeably more expensive, though I'm sure you could make it 2 mm thick.

One cool pixel-art trick (that I don't use here) is to make the model twice (or more) as thick by adding more blocks. Colored sandstone material models have to be 2 mm thick or Shapeways won't print them. This model here, is printed at 1 mm per block, and the creator just doubled up the blocks to get to 2 mm. On the backside he made the panda's eyes a different color.

The joke goes, "Darn contractors! Can't follow the plans!" I built this one in binvox in Vokselia. Meant to be printed in color.

A chunk of our spawn area in Vokselia, done as a test. This is the absolute largest (at least in X and Z - the height limit is 7.8 inches high) that you can print in color, it's as large as the ZPrinter 650 printer can go. I was surprised, I thought the cost would be in the thousands, but it's "just" $633.14. The area here is 190 x 125 blocks, 2 mm wide. If you are sure you have no thin objects (tree trunks are particularly bad, they'll snap right off), you could go down to 1 mm. That's the scale of the model shown here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/postapocalyptic/6606221371/in/pool-1862849@N21/

Adobe Abode from Vokselia, by Sarconix for Lovely Shiv. The tree on top came off (trees are tough to safely print), and Shapeways was super-nice about this problem.

A 2-block-wide slice of regloh's amazing glass sphere project (which would be too heavy and way too expensive to print). I had it printed, but it indeed broke along the thin connectors between the dome and base. Shapeways was very nice about it, offering to glue it up as possible or a store credit - I went for the "glue it up" option.

Heaven's Teardrop, semi-affordable. I worry about the "drop" itself in the middle snapping off.

Heaven's Teardrop, fusty's magnum opus (well, until The Maze gets finished). I worry that the center drop would print correctly. I checked - it's solid inside - but the blob is held up by a pretty thin strand of material.

Seaside bungalow made by Morgan, exported using Mineways, http://mineways.com Just a little test, to see how cheap a color model could be and still be somewhat interesting.

The 2 mm/block safe-to-print size, but obviously pricier. I have a 1 mm/block size, too.

I tried a 1 mm/block version of Sentinel Castle, chopping off the western tower and turning off trees, as the walkway there looks too thin to print safely. Shapeways may decide to not try printing this one, but I thought it would be interesting to see. It's certainly much cheaper!

My first attempt to make a 1mm/block model. I think it should print fine... And it did. This is Inky from Quaxalot's Isthmus of Blissness. Note that this model indeed has indentations and so on - it's from our world, there's a whirlpool in the water and some raised sand in the corner. It's not meant to be perfect (at least that's my excuse).
