This project makes use of the intricate geometries and flexible behaviours that are possible with 3d-printed polyamide - holding 111 five-eurocent coins firmly in place to create a stunning necklace. E 5.55 is currently available as a DIY project. Start saving coins now - it’s half the fun. Alternatively, many banks can provide you with those rolls of 5 eurocent coins that you need, at a small cost. A fully assembled version of E 5.55 will be available from michielcornelissen.com soon. Mail me at michiel(at)michielcornelissen(dot(com for wholesale possibilities. Copper can oxidize and become darker over time - which can actually give a great look. If you prefer lighter, shinier coins, there’s an easy - and fun! - way to clean them. Snap the coins out of the necklace, and submerge them in vinegar (you can add table salt, too) for a few minutes. Stir well, to make sure plenty of vinegar gets everywhere. Rinse the coins in hot water, and dry them. It’s magic. The necklace itself can be cleaned with water and soap and even dish-washed, after removing the coins. Each product ordered is individually manufactured, just for you. If you are new to the Shapeways site: to order, you'll be asked to create an account (it's easy; you can even log in with Facebook or Twitter). Product ships in basic Shapeways packaging. CableGuy is currently not available through the Shapeways site. My new product The Wrap, a handy cable winder for the European iPhone charger, can be found here.

CableGuy - cable winder and clip for Apple earphones

Many of us are familiar with two little issues related to the earphones we use with our iPhones and iPods. First, what do you do with ‘m when you’re not using them; and second, where do they go when you take out your buds for a few seconds.

CableGuy solves both of these problems for the Apple earphones that our iGadgets come with. The earbuds and plug find a home in the slots in CableGuy, while the cable can be wound neatly (or not so neatly, if you prefer) around it - making cable spaghetti a thing of the past.

But that’s not all. Clip it to your t-shirt, shirt pocket or bag, and CableGuy keeps your earphones from dropping to the floor when you’re on pause, using either the build-in cable clip or the earbud-fitting slots.

It's a cute little bird, but there's more to it. Merry Bird is an example of a product that can only be manufactured with 3d-printing technology. ?Take a close look: the bird and its hinged (!) swing are printed right inside the cage - no post-production assembly is necessary.

Originally designed as a Christmas ornament, Merry Bird looks good enough to display all year round.

Merry Bird is also available in design stores worldwide through designlabel Soonsalon; mail Sheila for information on the nearest shop to buy, and wholesale options.

Both a tribute to ubiquitous, and lovely, hexagonal colour pencils, and a representation of what was coined by Joris Peels as 'combinatory manufacturing'.

Combine the connector piece with any set of 36 standard hexagonal pencils of about 7.0 mm cross section (measured at the smallest diameter). These types of sets are available around the world from many department stores and art supply stores - I’ve seen good sets for as little as 5 euro.

Examples of pencils that fit are Stabilo Aquacolor 1600, and Caran d’Ache Prismalo I, but there are many more. I’ve recently heard that in the US, Prismacolor Verithin Colored Pencils (available from Amazon and others) work well. Normal black pencils often have the same size and shape and can be used too.

If you are new to the Shapeways website: to order you will be asked to create an account (it's easy). Assembly may leave slight marks on pencils. For more information on this or other products, please visit www.michielcornelissen.com.

Important notice: a lot of people have been very happy with this product, but, as can be read in some of the comments below, it's clear that this design is right on the edge of what Shapeways can produce to the right quality at this moment. If you buy it, there's a risk of having a less then perfect fit, colors can be different from what you see on the screen, and, depending on how you use your phone as well as the tolerances of the case, it has been reported that the polyamide material can give a sort of polishing/scratching effect on the metal rim of the phone (you can find descriptions online of how to remove these kind of blemishes, but it may still be annoying).
Shapeways has, in my experience, been very good with customer service on this item, so they'll be happy to either return your money or provide a new product if you would be one of the unlucky ones; but it's up to you if you want to run the risk that you may have to go through this process.

Essential protection for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4

Even though 4-4 may be the worlds lightest and smallest iPhone 4 case, it still provides great protection to the vulnerable edges of the iPhones' front and back covers - while all controls and connections remain accessible. Its slightly protruding profile helps prevent protect the glass when laying your phone down; using 4-4 can also help to avoid signal loss problems.

This bumper-style case may be combined with commercially available screen protectors. 4-4 is manufactured from tough and durable 3d printed polyamide; it has a slightly textured surface that gives you great grip on your phone. Available in white, black and limited edition colors - note that in white, the 3d printed material may get dirty more quickly - but you can (seriously!) dishwash this product, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. The 4-4 case is designed to have a tight fit around for iPhone. To put the iPhone in the case, or take it out, start at one of the bottom corners, where there are no buttons. Colors in the images above are for reference only; please check under 'select material' to get the most up-to-date preview of currently available product colors. Product is shipped in basic Shapeways packaging.

4-4 fits the GSM and CDMA/Verizon versions of iPhone 4, as well as the new iPhone 4S.

A two pack of 4-4's in the same color is available at reduced prices here.

You can have a look at all the products in my shop here. Consider buying 4-4 together with The Wrap, a handy cable winder for the European iPhone charger.

KXX is a multifunctional light, based on the traditional Afro-Brazilian caxixi instrument. The images show the result of my cooperation wiith capoeirista and artisan Cabral Elastico from Recife, Brazil, using a combination of Shapeways-printed nylon parts and woven natural fibers.
KXX is not for sale yet; I'm hoping to be able to bring this product to retail channels through a design and/or fairtrade brand in the near future.

Using 30 standard-sized pencils, and this kit, you can create an icosahedron-shaped object of about 38 cm or 15 inch in diameter. Use it as a cool lampshade, or just as fun and educational object to have around.
Fits standard hexagonal (colour) pencils of about 7.0 mm cross section - measured at the smallest diameter. Any length of the pencils will work, as long as they're all the same.
If you are new to the Shapeways website: to order you will be asked to create an account (it's easy).

Please note that the available colours are subject to what Shapeways offers, and may be different from those shown in the images here. Please refer to the support section for available colors. Assembly may leave slight indents on pencils.

Tool, symbol or both?

The bits on this pendant are based on actual bit sizes - including an IKEA standard tool - so 'a bit cross' can be used for light jobs. Just remember the steel isn't tempered like 'real' tool bits and tolerances may vary.

I recommend using it with a red leather cord of about 78 cm/ 31 inch.
