Elytra are the wing covers of beetles, from the Greek for "sheath."
Here you'll find biologically inspired sculptures designed for 3D printing. I strive to make forms that intrigue and surprise, and whose fabrication would profoundly challenge traditional production methods. Printing is uniquely well-suited to reproducing the involutions, overhangs and cavities that biological development creates so effortlessly.
I will print and post photographs of every design available here. If you want to try any of these designs in a material that I haven't tested, please let me know.
A tiny scarab beetle, with all the little details. She is exactly 4.9 cm from her front to her back claws, with a body roughly 3.5 cm long.
Please note, her claws are so small that they exceed the nominal resolution of Shapeways' machines, so you may see substantial variation in quality at this scale.
From above, a classic Egyptian scarab; from below, a real scarab.
The scarab is in a typical defensive posture, legs folded. As a result, it presents a strikingly different aspect when turned over.
This model is scaled to fit well in the hand, and because of the folded posture, is robust enough to travel well in a pocket. Mine goes with me everywhere. Warning: the claws are as sharp as they look.
