The Avatar Chess Set is the modern incarnation of the Staunton set designed by Nathaniel Cook and made available in 1849. The Avatar Chess Set was designed from 1995 to 1998 by Frank Deras Jr. on an early Apple PowerMac 7500 using Ray Dream Designer. Twelve years later, the original designs were transferred from printed copies, then rendered by hand onto a current iMac. With the emergence of Shapeways and today’s 3D printing technology, this chess set has finally become a reality in stainless steel. The weight and texture has added to the impact of playing the game with a willing partner. The abundance of different materials will appeal to all budgets but I highly recommend the look, weight and permanence of stainless steel. For the opponent set, I recommend matte black steel.
