Ottis Lance, “Otter” is by all accounts a racer’s racer. Otter is a legend in his own right in the world of motorcycle road racing. He is a master engine builder and mechanic. He is a teacher to many and a friend to all who have ever crossed his path. His racing career spans over 45 years, starting in the world of motocross. When Otter served in the U.S. Army at the young age of 17 until he was 22 he would supplement his income by racing on weekends. Upon reentering the civilian work force he opened a Suzuki dealership in Ft. Stockton, Texas. His love for racing continued to grow and in 1984 he started road racing and the rest is history. Otter worked his way through the ranks of club racing and endurance racing until he was competing at the top level of AMA Road Racing in the United States. Having earned the respect of his peers he quickly became an A List racer and was invited to race all over the world, including England, Mexico, and Australia. To this day, Ottis Lance is a mentor and has many students that he assists in helping them to reach their motorcycle riding and racing goals. On October 1, 2014, Otter was the victim of a horrific street accident that nearly took his life and has robbed him of what will soon be a year of his life. While riding his Suzuki GSXR1100 at approximately 55 mph, an oncoming car went left of center into his lane. There was no avoiding the impact and Ottis was left lying on the road in a comatose state with 3 broken vertebrae, 8 broken ribs, a critically injured right leg which included 5 inches of missing femur, a destroyed knee, and compound fractures to his tibia. Otter has undergone over 100 days of hospitalization, 14+ surgeries, with more still to come. He is currently partaking in physical therapy and is at present discussing an extensive surgery on his right hand with his orthopedic team of doctors. Yet through all of this Otter has maintained his sense of humor and his positive attitude. His contagious laugh is still evident as he looks forward to returning to the racetrack again to continue his journey. It is time for all of us to step up and help.
