CC 1 USS Lexington 1916 1/2400

In 1916 the US-Navy ordered their first 6 battlecruisers. Well armed with 10 14" guns in 2 tripple-turrets and 2 twin-turrets and a very high speed of more than 35knots (as fast as an destroyer), the design lacks the necessary armor-protection for such an expensive vessel. After the lessons of the battle of Jutland, the Navy redesigned the ships for a better protection and heavier armament of 4 x 2 16" guns. The Washington Treaty forced the Navy to cancel this project, the building 4 of this cruisers are stopped and the material was scrapped, two of them, the Lexington and Saratoga, were finished as aircraft carriers. For a long time, this two ships are the largest and fasted capital ships in the world. This model shows the Lexington in their original 1916 design with the unique arrangemant of their 7 stacks and 2 x3 and 2 x 2 14" turrets 

 

Im Jahre 1916 bestellte die US-Marine ihre ersten 6 Schlachtkreuzer. Gut bewaffnet mit 10 x 35,4cm Geschützen in  zwei Drillings- und zwei Zwillings-Türmen, so wie einer ausserordendlich hohen Geschwindigkeit von ca. 35 Knoten, (so schnell wie ein Zerstörer), wies dieser Entwurf nur eine unzureichende Panzerung für so ein wertvolles Schiff auf. Die Lehren der Skagerak-Schlacht machten eine komplette Umarbeitung des Entwurfes notwendig, welche erst im Jahre 1920 abgeschlossen wurde. Nun mit einer besseren Panzerung und einer Bewaffung von 4 x 2 40,6cm Geschützen wurden die Schlachtkreuzer auf Stapel gelegt. Der Flottenvertrag von Washington zwang die Navy auf diese Schiffe zu verzichten, deshalb wurden 4 der Kreuzer auf den Helgen abgebrochen und die Lexington und Saratoga als Flugzeugträger fertig gestellt. Lange Zeit waren diese beiden Träger die größten und schnellsten Großkampfschiffe der Welt. Dieses Modell zeigt die Lexington im Ursprungsdesign von 1916 mit 10 x 35,4cm Geschützen und der einzigartigen Anordnung Ihrer 7 Schornsteine.
