This model has been painted with fabric paint and rubbed with candle wax to make it smoother so it doesn't "grab" the wool so much. One could just have it made with a smoother, polished plastic.

The "button" is for open weave, or lacy crocheted or knitted shawls, and holds both sides of the shawl together.
