A development of the successful V-175 'Flying Pancake', the XF-4U was intended to be a high speed navy fighter with good low speed characteristics and small deck footprint. Development delays meant that the design was not able to show its full potential and the project was cancelled in 1947 as jets were clearly the future for fighter aircraft.
The position of the large propellors at the wingtips was important as with 'handed' engines it allowed the prop wash to cancel out the normal wing tip vortices so making the short wings much more efficient that they would otherwise have been.
The spherical recess underneath the model is for mounting it on a 6mm BB. Landing gear has been included by request.
