Skeleton armies are great, at least until they run into someone with half a brain which is usually half a brain more than your skeleton minions have.
It's not uncommon for evil masterminds to look back at their lifes (usually when they're about to die with a sword through their chest) and wish they had spent less time micromanaging their undead minions and more time enjoying other, less frustrating activities, like the torture of innocents or expediting the expiration of former allies.
If that sounds familiar, don't worry, all hope is not lost (well, not for you anyway, yet!).
Enter the Lich King.
Powerful leaders in life, Lich Kings retain some of their original skills (if not their charisma) in death, making them ideal generals able to effectively command your lesser skeleton armies on a day to day basis, converting them into an efficient and disciplined force to be reckoned with.
Think about all the additional plots and machinations you'll have time for with the organisational power to back them up!
Sure, Lich Kings may be strong, smart and devious which, in very rare cases may allow them to break free from your binding spells and turn on you... but let's be honest, your odds to win a confrontation or even survive the day are generally a lot better with a Lich in charge of your minions while you stay back at a safe distance.
The rightful future ruler of the Kingdom shouldn't be bothered with petty battles and your ranks filled with the once 'brave & bold' are a walking testament to the futility of those same qualities ...worthless to someone of your stature.
