Giant Wētā have been around long enough to see dinosaurs come and go. Wētāpunga are very large insects, unique to New Zealand. Adult female wētāpunga are heavier than males and can weigh up to 35 grams. That's heavier than an average house sparrow.Wētāpunga feed on fresh leaves and prefer native plants with large leaves such as karaka, karamu, māmāngi, māhoe, and kohekohe.
