Product Description

Seven-Planet Somsky Gears is a planetary gear constellation with seven planetary gears and a sun gear that is offset from the center. Inspired by Oskar's Looney Gears, Bill Somsky discovered a method to create exact planetary gear constellations with offset gears in 2012. Such constellations are called Somsky Gears. Whereas Somsky's method typically results in four planetary gears, in 2015 he discovered this constellation of seven. Fred lunnon's posted a well-argumented conjecture that the maximum number of planets in a Somsky constellation can be eight, but that overlap of planets cannot be avoided with eight planets. So seven planets may be as good as it gets.
