Ships of the Kurile class are named after islands in the Kurile Island chain between Russia and Japan. Developed during a time when the ownership of the Islands was under contention, their names were seen as a deliberate provocation towards Japan. The Kuriles’ design is something of an anomaly. Unlike other Russian craft, they carry a number of protection systems. They include an extensive fire sprinkler system, fireproofing, a reinforced hull, increased compartmentalization and two 4-person escape pods. It also has better life support systems, with heated pressure suits and air compressors provided for the crew. Its weaponry is impressive, with a number of long-range weapons, but it has little fire control, limiting its effectiveness.
