Product Description
This is a shape model of the Homunuculus Nebula, a shell of gas expanding away from the massive binary star system known as Eta Carinae. In the 1840s, the system underwent an unprecedented outburst known as the Great Eruption, when it briefly became the second-brightest star in the night sky and ejected the nebula. This model is a smoothed version of one produced by astronomers who determined the 3-D structure through mapping of the nebula's molecular hydrogen gas. The total length of the real Homunculus is about 1 light-year.
