This tea light lantern is based of the Menger–Sierpinski sponge, a fractal in which each face of a cube is subdivided into nine squares (like a Rubik's Cube). Each of these nine sections is then again subdivided, creating a total of twenty seven smaller cubes. In the middle of each face the smaller cube is removed, creating a sponge like architecture.
This sponge is a level three sponge, where the original cube has been subdivided three separate times. A Menger sponge can be subdivided infinitely, creating a fractal curve that simultaneously has an infinite surface area but encloses zero volume.
