Product Description
In 1917 Umberto Boccioni's sculpture 'Spiral Expansion of Muscles in Movement' was destroyed. After a successful Kickstarter campaign I have sculpted a digital re-creation of this sculpture, and will be showing a full size version in 2017, a hundred years since its loss.

Shapeways printed the rewards I sent to backers for the campaign, they did an amazing job, with superb quality, delivering them safely around the world.  There were three sizes: 6 inches (15.2 cm), 4.5 inches (11.4cm) and 3 inches (7.5cm)

Since the campaign I've had requests for these 3D prints from those that found the campaign after it ended.  I'm now very pleased to open a Shapeways shop and make them available to a wider audience.

History of the work

'Spiral Expansion of Muscle in Movement', was first shown in 1913 in Paris, as part of Boccioni's solo exhibition, it was later destroyed in 1917, a year after the artist died in a tragic horse riding accident.

Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916) was an Italian painter and sculptor, who in his short lifetime of 33 years became extremely influential in the Futurist movement. In 1916 he was drafted into the Italian Army. During a cavalry training exercise he was thrown from his horse, and tragically died the following day from his injuries.

Boccioni’s artistic work started with painting and drawing, and these led onto his great works of sculpture. He is known for his surviving sculpture the bronze cast of 'Unique Forms of Continuity in Space', which can be seen in major art galleries in the world.

I've thoroughly researched every available visual reference, photographs, drawings and rare books, to help me re-create the work.

'Spiral Expansion of Muscles in Movement' is a great accomplishment in its own right. Made just before his master piece, 'Unique Forms of Continuity in Space' 1913.

By recreating 'Spiral Expansion of Muscles in Movement' the comparisons with his masterpiece 'Unique forms' become much clearer. I hope this will give a wider view and context to his masterpiece.

Personally, I believe this sculpture is captivating and unique. I hope you also share my enthusiasm and deep interest in the work and the project.
