HO scale DRGW 01400 series caboose

Begining in 1937, the DRGW began to recognize the need to replace their wooden caboose fleet with all steel construction. Built by Burnham Steel Car Shop in Denver, the first fifty cabooses, #01400-01449 were delivered 10 a year from 1940 to 1945. They featured Riveted alloy steel,  wooden window sashes and weighing a little over 23 tons. They rode on Bettendorf swing motion with cast integral journal boxes. They were decorated in all black paint, white "flying" Rio Grande, lettering and safety appliances, cast raised road number in silver.

The next twenty delivered, came in two batches. the first ten; 01450-01459 was deliverd in the fall of 1947, and the second half; 01460-01469 in the spring of 1951. This delivery was visually thr same, with the addition of electricity. The the first ten came with a small generator, interior electricity, and a large PRR style radio antenna. Two yellow stripes ran horizontily above and below the road number signified radio equipped.
