Toyo Matrix

Make your own double-wholetone-row chromatic toyo (contrabass panpipe) using this scaleable model and PVC pipes. This matrix is designed to hold your tubes together while also providing inserts to form the ideal "wine bottle" inner profile used by today's Peruvian toyo makers. Made to fit a tube inner diameter of 26.5mm by default, it can be scaled to fit whatever diameter pipes you have available. 25 pipes offering a 2-octave range of your choosing.

 

You will need to measure the inside diameter of your pipe with calipers in two directions and find the average. You will need tuning corks or plastic plugs for an airtight join at the bottom. The ends of the tubes can be secured with large rubber bands made by cutting up a motorbike inner tube. A rough guide to cutting the lengths is 1 semitone down = +6%.length.
