The Polikarpov I-5 was the standard Soviet fighter plane of the early 1930's and the forerunner of the later Polikarpov I-15 and I-16. By the time of the Second World War, it was only used for secondary purposes such as pilot training. Still, some saw action attacking German ground troops in the early days of "Operation Barbarossa"
