Vintage style industrial angled lamp-shades in O scale (1:48), ready for installing micro LEDs, set of 40. Lamp shade diameter: 6.3 mm (scale 12 inches). This scale is also a popular one for dollhouse miniatures.
Assembly:
The lamps are sprued in a tree so they do not get misplaced or damaged in the manufacturing process. Use a sprue cutter or fine surgical blade to snip each lamp off the frame at the flush mount fitting. Each lamp stem has a 0.4mm hole through it that may require some cleaning by hand with piano wire or a 0.4mm dental drill bit, to remove any left over plastic powder. The hole is wide enough to pass a pair of enameled wires ("magnet wire") of 28 to 36 gauge, to connect to the micro LED.
To make a realistic looking bulb out of a micro LED, use warm white or amber LEDs of 0603 or 0805 size, and dip each LED in clear or preferably translucent glue, such as gorilla glue, after soldering the magnet wires to it. The glue should leave a somewhat globular drop around the LED, thus making it look like a classic light bulb once it dries. Pass the magnet wires through the stem of the lamp, such as to partially insert the LED into the lampshade. At the ether end, hook the wires to your power source in series with an appropriate resistor.
The model arrives unpainted, in translucent Frosted Ultra Detail plastic (recommended material). For realism, it needs to be painted and an LED added, before installation into your model railroad layout or diorama.
This model is also offered in White Strong & Flexible / Polished, for those on a tight budget. Please note that the ShapeWays tools indicate there may be a marginal chance of ShapeWays not being able to print it in this material. If the print fails, you get a refund from ShapeWays, so the choice is yours. Also, WSF prints do not get the fine level of detail that FUD and Frosted Extreme Detail offer.
