The Explorer was designed for the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society to support long-duration exploration in potentially dangerous regions. It featured a Modular hull, cargo handling equipment, and a variety of safety and repair features. There was ample support for scientific study, including lab space, medical facilities, photographic equipment, astronomical equipment, and a library.
