Serotonin is a neurotransmitter associated with emotions of well-being and happiness.

Serotonin has varied functions within the body as it is found in the intestines, central nervous system and in the blood. In the intestines, serotonin functions to gauge food availability, regulate intestinal movement and gauge social situations in regards to food. In the blood and central nervous system serotonin functions to regulate growth and reproduction, ageing, learning and memory, bone metabolism and organ development.

Medical applications aim to increase serotonin levels throughout the brain. These medications are useful in the treatment of depression, anxiety conditions, social phobia conditions and nausea.

Serotonin is found in many common foods, including mushrooms, pineapples, bananas, kiwifruit, plums and tomatoes.
