Product Description
The Milledgeville began life as a Richmond class ironclad laid down in 1862 or 1863 at Savannah, but was significantly altered so that, by the end of 1863, she had become an entire class unto herself. The final design featured a squared of pyramidal casemate with gunports at all corner facings and a small, shallow draft hull. She probably carried two 6.4" Brooke Rifles. At least two more ships - Ashley and Cooper - were laid down to a very similar plan at Charleston, but were not finished when Charleston fell to the Union. Milledgeville was completed and commissioned on December 21st, 1864. Not long after, Union forces approached Savannah, and it was decided to evacuate. Milledgeville was (somewhat controversially) scuttled, having served just over a few hours on active duty. We don't know what, if any, colors Milledgeville was painted in for service, but light or medium grey is often used to depict her. An alternative would be to depict her in bare metal, but all of the Georgia ironclads seem to have been painted prior to completion as a measure of protection against the heat.
