+ New website
| |
We have a new website! We're still recovering from the work and the champagne but we're eager to share the news with you. The new site is much nicer looking and we added a whole bunch of improvements (including the long awaited STL support!).
In this newsletter I'll introduce two of our team members: our CEO Peter Weijmarshausen, and our CMO Jochem de Boer. They'll both share some insights from their side of our story so far.
On the community side of things, Shapeways is steadily making its appearance on the internet. As a result new members are pouring in and the blog, forums and galleries are really coming alive. It's a great time to be here!

+ Shapeways to the next level!

Dear Shapies,
Today we launched our new look and feel of the website, of which we are very proud. It is a nice moment, to share a little of the process with you.
In January this year we started the process to develop our own brand, including name, personality and look and feel. It was a fun process which we tried to do using as much input from people inspired by the Shapeways idea as possible. The first deliverable from the sessions was our new name: Shapeways. We also gave our brand a lot of thought and this all came together (being an internet service) in the look and feel of our portal, together with some new features.

+ Shapeways: passionate about creating
As every marketer knows deep down, the truth is that a brand is owned by its customers: “user-generated branding is happening whether companies want it to or not”.
We have taken that thought a step further by developing a brand that allows co-creation with you and the 3D objects you create: in our logo your 3D objects are taking center stage. They will inspire all of us every time.

+ STL support is here!
The request we received most often was to support the STL file format. Being the granddaddy of file formats in rapid manufacturing, almost every 3D design application can export STL. As of today, Shapeways also accepts these files.
This will make it MUCH easier to get your design on Shapeways as you'll no longer have to rely on a third-party application to convert the files.

+ Other website improvements
The STL support is not the only improvement on the site; we've squashed lots of bugs (77 tickets!) and added a bunch of improvements. Here's a short overview of the most important ones:
- Previews now render correctly even if no material has been assigned (they used to become completely white).
- We've added a second layer of error correction, making the upload and conversion process much more robust.
- The quality of the thumbnail previews is improved.
- The shop has been made easier to use.
- Files from the default Blender 2.46 X3D exporter are now recognized correctly.

+ Sneak peek: Metal Laser Sintering
We're trying out new production methods and new materials all the time. Last week, we played with Metal Laser Sintering which produced this cool golden lion (well, not really in gold, but it looks good, doesn't it?).
