About this Product

This polyhedron has 60 evenly-sized, evenly-shaped faces, all of which are pentagons. A diverse array of bright colors coats the polyhedron, with small clusters of similar colors located at opposite ends of the shape. If you want, you can use a pen to mark numbers onto each face to form a sixty-sided die, or d60. EDIT: I received my model of this, and while it looks nice, it does not function as a die. Sorry if my prior statement was misleading, but I honestly thought it would work -- I'm disappointed too!

@smileylich I think that the pentagonal hexahedron and pentakis dodecahedron have symmetry such that there are parallel opposing faces, so a side will face up. As the number of sides increases, it is less obvious which face is up. The pentagonal hexahedron should be slightly more stable, on a side, than the pentakis dodecahedron. If you want a truly fair die, you would want to use a molding process. I think that laminate printing introduces a subtle bias in weight distribution.

smileylich: Thanks for your purchase! Though I am not making any profit off of these, I like hearing that someone was interested at least. I was concerned about the price of this thing if it got much bigger, but yeah, it is too small to work as a die at the moment, not to mention the fact that it doesn't have a proper face showing or ever stop rolling... I will see if I can enlarge this thing since you requested it; it sounds like that shouldn't be hard at all. I will try to make a Deltoidal Hexecontahedron as well as your suggestion, the Pentakis Dodecahedron, but I don't exactly remember all the steps I took to make this thing (I have no real 3D modeling experience, so I was stumbling in the dark trying to make this 3D-printable given an automatically-generated polyhedron from Vasily Bulatov's fantastic applet at http://bulatov.org/polyhedra/stellation_applet/index.html ). What size do you think is appropriate to use a shape like this as a die? Keep in mind the faces should be roughly the same size as the ones on this model no matter what the polyhedron as long as it is 60-sided (that is, really small compared to those on a cube).

Upon further reading ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan_solid ), it is not clear to me that a face is actually showing on the top. It might be an edge or vertex (it's hard to tell with the model as it is small). The Pentakis dodecahedron ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentakis_dodecahedron ), another 60-sided solid, seems like it has an edge face up when it is resting on a face.

I bought one of these out of curiosity. It indeed does not function as a die, but I think the main problem is that it is too small. It will still probably roll forever even if it was twice (or three times) the size, but at least you could more easily tell which side is up. I will continue to be a guinea pig here and ask if shapeways can make a larger one.
