Using 30 standard-sized pencils, and this kit, you can create an icosahedron-shaped object of about 38 cm or 15 inch in diameter. Use it as a cool lampshade, or just as fun and educational object to have around.
Fits standard hexagonal (colour) pencils of about 7.0 mm cross section - measured at the smallest diameter. Any length of the pencils will work, as long as they're all the same. Assembly may leave slight marks on pencils.

Hadn't seen that one before- thanks for spotting. There is some similarity in the idea, but I think the execution and rationale are different enough to make this concept stand on its own.

I've seen this as a lighting concept before... http://www.yankodesign.com/2007/09/07/bucky-sustainable-lighting/

Thanks... I was looking for a way to create bigger objects, without making them prohibitively expensive (I sort of managed...), and went looking for things with worldwide availability. It took a bit of experimenting but now the pencils have a really snug fit.

Excellent idea! I like the combination of common objects and 3D printing!
