About this Product

1:300th scale Tatra 111 truck towing SON-9A fire-control radar. The Tatra 111 was a Czechoslovakian WW2-era series of models, originally for German service; they were produced continuously until 1962, when they were replaced by the T-138 series, by which date the T-111's decidedly old-fashioned cab had been updated (this model depicts the older style). The Soviet-made SON-9A was introduced in the 1950s for use with the S-60 57 mm, KS-12 85 mm and KS-19 100 mm AAA pieces; typically 2 firing platoons each of 3 weapons were controlled by one radar. It was later superseded by the RPK-1 radar which was mounted on the roof of a URAL-375D truck. The photo comes courtesy of Fred Oliver, and shows an example printed out in the default cheapest WSF plastic. Note that the SON-9A wheels have been scaled down from a larger model, so don't expect the tyre tread details shown in the computer rendering to print out unless using the very expensive FUD plastic! (the knobs of the treads are just 0.12 mm wide at this scale...) Since the other details are at the 0.2 mm level they appear even with the cheap stuff. Also note the SON-9A model has NOT taken from a blueprint or other scale diagram, and I've had to estimate many of the measurements concerned from photos. (If anybody has a scale diagram, I'd be most grateful to receive a copy!) Note however that the mudguards around the front wheels of the T-111 frequently get rejected by the Shapeways operators as being "too thin", so if you order this model, there is a good chance your order won't go through (despite it printing out OK for other people like Fred...) So I may have to change the model, and thicken the mudguards...
