Product Description
This is one of several prints that will be created to accompany the illustrations and animations of the pre- cambrian creatures that were created for "The Cambrian Explosion" by Doug Erwin and James Valentine A spectacular new lobopodian from the Chengjiang fauna, Diania cactiformis, has added a new dimension to the question of arthropod origins. Diania is heavily armored, with the spiked elements encasing the limbs, suggesting jointing and at least some incipient segmentation. The trunk armor, the elements of which are quite narrow, suggests a different sort of flexibility. It is easy to imagine that the jointing that characterizes the arthropod carapace evolved from some such integumental armor while integrating internal segmental features within the jointed skeletal architecture to produce the arthropod body plan. This print was developed as part of a series of 3D reconstructions for Doug Erwin and Jim Valentine's new book "The Cambrian Explosion: The Construction of Animal Biodiversity" (Roberts & Company Publishers 2013).
