(Giraffa camelopardalis)

This male stands 4,8 m (15.75 ft) tall.
The giraffe’s scattered range extends from Chad in the north to South Africa in the south, and from Niger in the west to Somalia in the east. Giraffes usually inhabit savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands. They can also be found in semi desert areas.
Despite its extreme length, the Giraffes neck is actually too short to reach the ground. As a result, it has to awkwardly spread its front legs or kneel on its front legs in order to reach the ground to drink water. In this position they are very vulnerable so the giraffe can drink 45 liters (12 gallons) of water in one sitting and can go for weeks without drinking at all. The high water content in the leaves an fruit they eat ensures that a giraffe can go longer without water than a camel.
The giraffe species as a whole is assessed as Least Concern from a conservation perspective at the IUCN, as it is still numerous, but two subspecies, the West African giraffe (G. c. peralta) and the Rothschild giraffe (G. c. rothschildi), have been classified as Endangered, as wild populations of each of them number in the hundreds.
