Product Description
Kit to make one HO scale four wheel wooden hopper, commonly called a coal jimmy. These cars were ubiquitous in the eastern coal mining regions of North America from the 1840 to 1900 and ran in the early day version of unit trains. This version features cast pedestal mounted journals and was built from about 1855 to 1900. Also available is a version with wood sprung journals, kit HOR15 and as a two car set.
Modeled after drawings and photos of Pennsylvania, Reading, and Central of New Jersey examples ca. 1875.
Includes basic brakes and every detail I could find from the original drawings, too bad I couldn't get the doors to actually operate. Use .020" wire (not included) for the brake staff, for which there are holes in the body bracket, ratchet, and brake wheel. Space and locator holes are provided for mounting Kadee couplers or use the included working link and pin couplers. 3 additional endbeam inserts are also included with link and pin couplers, simple hooks, or a hole for installing photoetch hook and link couplers.
Requires 33" wheelsets with approx. 1" (25.4mm) length axles.
This model has very fine detail so the preferred material is Frosted Ultra Detail.

Clean with alcohol and warm soapy water (or Bestene rubber cement remover if extreme) before painting. Some areas may require mild scraping with a toothpick to remove waxy manufacturing residue, especially the interior (an ultrasonic cleaner works great for this).
