About this Product

The first 3D Printed iPhone 5 Bumper designed to account for differences in outside temperatures that can make other 3D printed bumpers looser and tighter.

HeatLock is designed to be too small for your iPhone 5, which may sound strange, but is actually a revolutionary concept. As the bumper gets hotter, the plastic nylon it is made out of will expand, causing the bumper to get bigger. If the bumper starts too small for the phone, you could heat it up enough to get the case on, then as it cools it will fit perfectly.

When your case arrives simply heat it up with a blow dryer or heat gun for a few seconds to expand the plastic. Slip the case on and allow a few minutes for it to cool off. The case should shrink down so that it is snug to your phone.

Prototyping is complete! Model will fit very snug on an iPhone 5 after heating!


Using your bumper:
1. Unpack from box
2. Heat corners of bumper
3. Stretch onto iPhone
4. Keep heating and stretching until bumper fits
5. Enjoy!

To undo case, reverse process. iPhone will not be damaged by added heat; however, Shapeways nor SolidWorks Tech Designs assumes responsibility for any damage done to your iPhone.



Heat Resistance Guide for Materials :
White Strong and Flexible or Colored : 176 Degrees F
White or Black Detail : 118.4 Degrees F
Frosted Plastics : 176 Degrees F


Updates :
10/14/2012 : Model complete. Anylasis inside SolidWorks with an iPhone 5 model confirms all sides overlap iPhone by about 1/30th of its width and height. Holes should align after heating and cooling. Model uploaded.

10/24/12: Model recieved, inaccuracies corrected. Overall size increases and hole location changes. Overall width increased. Ordered another prototype to test new changes.

11/13/12: 2nd Version received. Model is correct and will now work with a slight heat. Model price increased- no longer in prototype.

For me the most important aspect of this bumper is the shrinking feature. But while shrinking / fitting works perfectly in x and y, it fails for z (height). The two frame bars don't get simultaneously in the correct position on the lateral iphone bevel, the bumper slips from one side to the other, with either the upper or the lower bar in position. I would suggest to enlarge the distance between the two frame bars on the inner side. 7 mm instead of 6.5 mm would fit exactely on the bevel of the iphone. This distance should not be scaled smaller as done for all other dimensions, because shrinking cannot work in this direction (height of phone).

I got one three months ago in red. The dye is rubbing off and it now looks hot pink. I like the design so am getting another in white. Many of my models I seal with polyurathane (rustolium clear coat works well). This will counter the "feel" complaint of astrism, below.

Astrim i would suggest looking up a video on sealing the strong and polished models with a combination of superglue and acetone! That or you could try a product called liquid rubber, which is basically a black rubber paste that will make it feel more like silicone

One other thing I'd say, for any Strong & Flexible(not polished) iPhone cases, its not soft or nice to touch, feels like a very abrasive sandpaper. It has a good grip to it, but I was longing for a soft rubbery feel. Maybe the polished material is better?

This worked out to be a good case for a couple weeks. It was incredibly hard to get on, but once I did it was snug, fitting well on all sides. Unfortunately it just took a nasty fall and while it saved my phone the case now has a large split. All in all, this case is a bargain and looks great, wish I hadn't been so careless :(

My suggestion would be to contact Shapeways immediately. If the case was broken when you got it, the error is probably with Shapeways. Sorry you were dissapointed! :(

I have a different iPhone case I ordered off shapeways that fits perfectly, thus I thought it would be safe to buy this as a present for Christmas for someone who wanted a very minimalist iPhone bumper. Upon receiving it (in white & polished) I was underwhelmed by the quality of the plastic. One of the speaker grates (the one closer to the headphone jack) was cracked before I took it out of the box. I gave it as a gift anyway. Things got worse after I put it on. It's may be the correct width but it is too long by at least a mm on both ends for an awkward fit. The speaker holes don't line up in the bottom. The sides don't snug onto the phone properly and slip around when you're holding the phone. Maybe something was worng with shapeways' printer or maybe this design needs improvement. Either way, I was very disappointed by the poor fit. Maybe I'll get her a bumper made by the designer who did my other case :/

I have modified the design so that it is as big as it can be. The hole is now 8mm wide. I'm not sure if that helps you or not but I hope so! Thanks for your interest! You could always use a jack extender too!

My only concern with this case is that it appears the headphone jack hole will prevent larger connectors from working. In combination with the difficulty of getting the case off, this could be a real problem. Widening the hole would probably make the case too weak there unless you create a little more width onto the surface of the phone. Otherwise looks awesome, very minimal yet highly protective - I'll get one once this issue is resolved or worked-around!

I repair iPhones all the time and as long as you know what your doing, a heat gun will not damage the phone (you have to keep the heat moving and dispersed over the phone not just held in one spot). However, the bumper will not be very tight so it shouldn't require much heat to get it off.
