A perfect scarab with all the little details. What an Egyptian metalsmith would have crafted, had the pharoahs dreamed of direct-metal printing.

To wear as a pendant, a simple 2mm-thick cord works well.

@ppoz, terrific. Thank you for the kind words, and I hope you enjoy it!

Just got mine and it looks beautiful! Thanks for creating such a lovely pendant.

@meiumi, the resolution for silver prints is higher than for stainless steel, but yes, the surface is more pebbly and stepped before polishing. The stainless steel is also polished, so the comparison is imperfect. For this piece, polishing is a good thing.
May 15, 2013, 2:53 pm
@dadrummond So would it look more like the texture of the stainless steel then but in silver? And thanks for the info! :)
May 15, 2013, 2:38 pm
@meiumi, I only have pictures of the silver glossy. The piece, though, has places that are polished and unpolished (the distinction between glossy and not), so the comparison is clear. The glossy finish makes a striking difference, making the beetle shell bright and reflective.
May 15, 2013, 2:35 pm
Also do you have pictures of the difference between the silver and silver glossy?
May 15, 2013, 2:19 pm
@meiumi, I'm not certain about durability. I've had mine for a couple of years with no chipping or wearing, but with limited use. There is not a trace of tarnish -- an advantage of gold! I believe that the gold plating will withstand frequent wear against fabrics; I would expect the plate to scratch and wear away over a long period or if given rough treatment. Hope this helps.
May 11, 2013, 7:37 pm
How durable is the gold on the gold plated? Does it chip, wear off, or tarnish?
May 11, 2013, 5:16 pm
@bennadel, unfortunately this model has all sorts of details that are right at the lower limit of what Shapeways' machines can presently produce. Any smaller, and the details that make the beetle look so lifelike would have to be sacrificed. (It took many, many tries to get a model that would print reliably and yet still had these details -- note that it was based on a previous model, http://www.shapeways.com/model/67037/folded-scarab.html, which is almost twice as big.) Wish I had better news.
April 7, 2013, 10:43 pm
Can you do custom size? I would like the design slightly smaller about 1 inch.
April 7, 2013, 10:28 pm
@dadrummond cool :)
April 7, 2013, 10:10 pm
@bennadel, the dimensions are accurate; it's 1.5 inches in length -- smaller than the real scarab after which it's modeled (Pachylomerus femoralis).
April 7, 2013, 7:13 pm
The pendant looks big in the picture like almost 2 inches in length? The description reads less than 1 inch in length. Which one is it? I'd rather prefer smaller so it looks alive.
April 7, 2013, 4:56 pm
@luxnova1925, the frosted and ultra detailed look quite similar. The ultra detailed is slightly smoother, as you might expect. The supports produce the two spots near the top of the wing covers; you may not care.
March 6, 2013, 6:58 am
Hey I'm sorry I keep asking questions, but what is the difference between the frosted detailed, and ultra detailed? and you say the supports are visible, but i don't see them in the picture- can i ask how visible they might be? Thank you so very much!
March 6, 2013, 6:48 am
@dadrummond That is so mind-blowing! I thought it was one of the bronzes! Sweet! Thanks!
March 5, 2013, 10:32 pm
@luxnova1925 these first two pictures show the Stainless Steel material (which is a combination of stainless steel and bronze). Enjoy!
March 5, 2013, 10:29 pm
This looks absolutely amazing and I can't wait to buy my own. Since I'm very new to this site and the materials I can choose from, I'm wondering if anyone could help me out be telling me what materials the first and second picture are made out of? (I like those two the best) Thanks!
March 5, 2013, 10:15 pm
@emilywhetstone duly noted -- thanks for weighing in; plastic will stay for now!
February 25, 2013, 4:39 pm
@dadrummond Thank you so much! I actually really like it, despite the visible supports; but of course you are the artist, and it's up to you what kind of art you want out there in the world.
February 24, 2013, 5:46 am
@emilywhetstone, ask and you shall receive. I've posted a photo of the Frosted Ultra Detail and Frosted Detail prints. I'm not certain I'll continue to offer these; I don't like the fragility or the translucency (because the scarab is hollow, with supports which become visible through the translucent wing covers). If anyone has feedback, I'd be happy to hear it.
February 23, 2013, 6:41 pm
@dadrummond I am really curious what this looks like in plastic... is there any way you could upload a picture?
February 22, 2013, 7:16 pm
This pendant introduced me to Shapeways, and as soon as I saw it I had to order one for myself. I ordered it in stainless and I love it. It's very detailed and wonderfully authentic. This piece really makes an impression and I love to wear it.

You can, indeed, use this as a brooch; all you need is a pin, which can be passed through the front legs just where the necklace would go. If you'd like it to be larger, would a 5cm version be large enough?
July 27, 2012, 4:19 pm
I have waited 5 years for this! Does this come as a brooch and perhaps a little bigger?
July 27, 2012, 3:36 pm
So great to hear that. Thanks for the comment!
June 8, 2012, 8:46 pm
This is truly beautiful. I could not be more pleased.
June 8, 2012, 8:36 pm
The metal version is fairly robust and I've never broken any of the many I have, despite carrying them in pockets. However, the legs are only attached at the tiniest patches -- realism over robustness! -- and have many snaggable and bang-uppable parts. So storing it in your pocket on your key ring is something you should do with eyes open. Still, be bold! And let me know if it doesn't hold up.
May 17, 2012, 12:24 am
Just got it in and it's stunning! Out of curiosity, is this model durable enough to withstand being in a pocket?
May 11, 2012, 5:37 pm
wow,so cute,i like it. do you want any cute jewelry?I have found many beautiful jewelry and its accessories at www.oksell.org,i hope you can like it too.

Wonderful to hear! Thank you.
April 21, 2012, 5:47 pm
I get SO MANY compliments on this piece- it's really the best pendant I own!
April 14, 2012, 5:22 pm
Beautiful piece! I just got my pendant in stainless steel- and it's the most unique pendants I've ever seen. A great design, very elegant with a touch of creepy. Love it!
March 11, 2012, 7:08 pm
i bought one in stainless, and the somewhat pebbled look is nice, i think, on an organic shape like this one. it's one of my favorite pieces of jewelry -- it gets compliments almost every time i wear it. it's big, but not too big, and heavy enough to feel durable without being too heavy. his name is "tumbleturd." :D i like to think of him as taking the "crappy" things in life and just rolling them away!
January 26, 2012, 6:12 pm
Now that's beautifull !
September 27, 2011, 6:43 pm
Thank you, it means a lot coming from someone with some of the coolest designs
August 6, 2011, 12:51 pm
Awesome! Silver glossy looks extremly great! :o)
June 29, 2011, 1:59 am
Yes, new process, Silver Glossy, which unlike the gold (plating on top of polished stainless steel/bronze) is cast in silver from a wax print and polished to a high sheen. A perfect process for this piece, I have to say.
April 29, 2011, 7:29 pm
Wow, that last picture is boggling! I've got a gold glossy that's not NEARLY that smooth looking! Is this a new thing?

Rats, I rated it one star too low. :-(
July 27, 2010, 4:45 pm
It just arrived, and it's lovely -- I'm wearing it right now and I'm absolutely thrilled with it. I'm pondering getting a glossy bronze one too, to hang off of my viola case. Absolutely gorgeous and honestly ... a must for any Journey fan! :-)

While shopping in South Korea, the store owner noticed my necklace and immediately asked where she could get one for herself and one for her husband. I showed her your store and she loved all your designs, especially the open beetle, and she asked me to buy and send her two scarab pendants in lieu of any payment for our goods! She didn't even care that the two pendants would come to less than half of the cost of the goods. Thanks for getting us a bargain with your beautiful pendant-- I will wear it every time I go shopping!

Very nice! I bought one for my wife and she loves it. (My 3 1/2-year old son has since decided he wants a giant version for himself.) The details are crisp in the steel, and the printing patterns give a nice naturalistic texture.

Incredibly beautiful! And affordable as well.
