The bottom is hollowed out, but a thin lip gives strength to the base.

There are not many iPhone 5's in southeast Alaska yet, so I had to borrow a demo from the AT&T store to get a picture of the stand in action.

The Tetrahedral iPhone 5 stand is inspired by simple molecular geometries. The stand is light and stable, in both portrait and landscape orientations.

I teach high school math and science, and I keep one of these stands on my desk at school. I like to FaceTime with my 18-month-old son during lunch whenever I can, and I designed the stand so I wouldn't have to prop up my phone during these conversations.

The stand is a steady conversation-starter. Students and visitors to my classroom always ask about it, and are surprised at how light and strong it is. I live in a small town in southeast Alaska, and very few people have the iPhone 5 yet. I had to visit three stores to find a demo iPhone 5 for pictures, and it was a fun visit when I finally found someone with a demo available. Staff at the AT&T store had never seen anything from a 3d printer before, and they were fascinated to see what can be done with 3d printing and design.

The stand is designed to fit a naked iPhone 5, with a 9mm cutout on the base. I have a larger version available with a 1.6cm cutout that fits the Otterbox Commuter case for the iPhone 4S. The stand works well as long as the cutout is larger than the case. (If you would like a stand with a custom size opening, please feel free to leave a comment below.)
