This is a mobius strip of Level 1 or Super Mario Bros. The whole level is wrapped around itself in a single surface, and poor Mario begins and ends at the same spot every time :(

All the elements from the level are there: every mushroom, turtle, cloud and star. They are all carved out of the surface at different heights, which looks fantastic when you have a light coming from the side, and each block casts a shadow.

It's a great piece to have on your desk, or to hang from a string to let it spin around.

Nice piece of work!

Doing Super Mario with a Mobius strip was brilliant. Very nice layout. This would look nice hanging from a cord, like I do with my Mobius Strip Dummies at my ArtBagel Shop.

Did you have to get any kind of licensing for this? It's really great but I would worry about that side of it, especially as it's so popular :/

Thanks @duann! That's awesome, that's an amazing top 10 list and I'm proud that this model made it to it.

@hakczar I had two versions, the original color map I textured over a UV map, and it's the only color information (as a jpg) that I sent to Shapeways. The modified grayscale I did I used during the modeling process to displace the model (a true displacement, not just a rendering displacement). So after doing the displacement, I didn't need the grayscale map anymore.

@joabaldwin how did you give shapeways the color information so they could print it with the original colors? You said you modified the colors to be essentially a greyscale displacement map...

My head has exploded with the awesomeness of this

Looks really neat, maybe for a Xmas ornament (like what acertain said) but thats awsome!
December 20, 2012, 1:14 am
What a great idea... *envious*
December 15, 2012, 5:10 pm
@acertain it is very light, under 2 ounces from what I can estimate. It wouldn't topple your tree over, it has just the weight of any Christmas ornament.
December 6, 2012, 5:06 pm
How much does it weigh? I'm wondering if it would work as a Xmas tree ornament.

@ChristianA I've been thinking about it... but I'm still holding out for the Sonic the Hedgehog strip!!!!

@bdickason I think you'd really like this since you're a huge gamer. Let me know if you purchase it. Would love to see some pictures!

This is the most delightful 3D print I've ever received!
November 14, 2012, 11:19 pm
what is this for? what can you do with it?

A great idea for another mobius strip would be Toy Story with a focus on Buzz 'To Infinity & Beyond!'. That would be PERFECT!

Hmmm, rearview mirror, I really don't know. Cold shouldn't be a problem, but long-term UV exposure, I have no clue about. I'll try to find out.
October 1, 2012, 11:35 pm
Well done! I love mine. I blows my mind every time I look at it. Question: How well would it hold up hanging from the rear view mirror of my car? Winter in coming here in Indiana. Would the cold have ill effects? What about sun light? Would it fade?

This is wonderful! How did you make this??
September 30, 2012, 6:28 pm
PS: I was skeptical about the material however no powder is rubbing off, it feels solid and porus at the same time, a drop onto tile would break it but as far as a desk piece to be handles it is nice. I'll tell you how it fairs in the long run for future buyers.

I bought this late at night on 9/26/12. I don't know how but its already here, less than 2 days but it did. This is a present for my friends birthday on the 14th of October and i wasn't sure if it would be here. Thank you so much, the pictures do it no justice. This thing is marvelous.
September 28, 2012, 6:48 pm
To be honest, I don't know about the longevity of the material, but I've had stuff in the same material printed for the first time about 3 years ago, and there are no issues with them so far (and they've been sitting out in the open, and handled by lots of people). If you give it to a child I'm sure it'll get scratched though. The material is porous so the idea of a glaze sounds neat, I might try it myself to see how that looks.

Just received mine in the mail. Absolutely awesome! I too am curious about longevity. Will it be fine in a simple, plastic, display case? Oh, and I'd love to see other games done this way....or even on a flat strip. Too bad Sonic didn't work..I'd buy that too.
September 27, 2012, 12:12 am
I just bought this for my daughter. This is my first sandstone purchase. Would it be necessary to coat it with some type of clear glaze to prevent the surface from crumbling due to over-handling?
September 21, 2012, 8:58 pm
I might make some other games/levels, it depends on how good they look on a simple strip like this (for example, Sonic didn't look good on a strip, though it seemed like it would).
September 21, 2012, 2:20 pm
This is real nice, think I'm gonna have to get me one. Sweet work. Are there any plans to do more levels or other games?
September 21, 2012, 9:07 am
This is SO COOL!
September 20, 2012, 7:18 pm
It's very strong because it's a single piece with no moving/thin parts, one single plane/volume. It'll chip if you drop it on a hard floor, and might crack too, but it won't break easily.
September 19, 2012, 3:02 am
How strong is the sandstone, my friend an i have the same birthday and im planning on buying 2. I just want to know if it needs to be displayed safely or if it can be dropped.
