The Hidden Heart Espresso Cup

Perfect for Valentine's Day (or any other day needing a little heart), The Hidden Heart Espresso Cup reveals a perfect heart shape when a double shot of espresso is poured into it. Because of its complex contours, this hidden shape can't be made with traditional molds or normal ceramic fabrication processes. Food-safe in Glazed Ceramics, and 2 make a perfect couple!

More about why complex shapes are difficult in ceramic:

Ceramic is usually either spun or poured into 2 part molds, but there are several limitations to this. With a spun piece (think pottery wheel), you can only easily make symmetrical shapes, and then if you want alter them a little bit from the outside. With a mold, you can make more complicated shapes but to be able to remove it from the mold, you can't have any contours that overhang (the underside, like a cliff, will get caught on the mold and you won't be able to pull it out). This is usually what's called draft.

3D Printing is Cool

Anyway with 3D printing those aren't problems, since the form is being built up layer by layer. The issue of draft goes away entirely, and there's much more freedom to focus on design. I like to design for the hand as well as the eye. Kitchen, food, and drink-ware should almost slide into your hand, and give you a closer connection to what you are putting in your body.

Of course, you still have to consider wall thickness and minimum feature height and a couple other things, but that's not a bad trade-off for getting any form you can image!

* Please note that the saucer is sold separately.

PS - If anyone has a picture of their Hidden Heart Cup in action they'd like to share, please send it my way at danieljchamberlin@gmail.com and I'll add it to this page! Thanks!

@ctdonath You know there have been several requests for a larger sized version, perhaps for cappuccino. If I get any more I will design it. Tweet me @danielchamberln if you want me to design a larger version. Cheers.

@duann awesomes! @lastorset There actually is a fairly standard size for espresso saucers, and I would recommend picking one of these up. I've designed several, but decided against putting them up on Shapeways at this time because of the cost. A saucer spun on a traditional wheel is easy to create and just a lot cheaper to make that way than it is to print. One you could use (particularly if you like the red) is on Mikasa: http://www.mikasa.com/Espresso-Saucer/5059925,default,pd.html I'm also definitely waiting for a red glaze to become available on SW! That would make many of my days.

We just featured you design on the Shapeways homepage http://www.shapeways.com/

Forgive me if this is something obvious to native English speakers, but does "saucer sold separately" mean that I can buy it separately from you, or that I must buy it somewhere else? I'm asking because I can't find it on your profile. Perhaps there's a "standard size" for espresso saucers?

@nobleweb Inspiration and a cup of coffee is all you need to start a great day ;-) If you have a design you want to make, go for it!

@mboylevt , I do, but the Nespresso Machine is really slow, though i had like 8 of them a day :-)

@MitchellJetten what, no love for the chemix at 419? :-)

@danieljchamberlin I am absolutely with Mitchell... an Italian Espresso or Cappuccino can be as good as a Greek Moka or a German Filter-Kaffee as long as you make it right ...but all beauty can be ruined easily if you do something wrong ...then even the "Heart Espresso Cup" wouldn't help me out anymore :-) Daniel... would you mind if I create something similar one day. This cup got me really inspired :-)

@danieljchamberlin I'm all about the French Press. Mainly because I can't fathom using more mental energy than grind, pour and press at 7am

@danieljchamberlin, to be honest, i love all coffee... as long as it's good :-) I love the coffee at our LIC office, not sure what sort of coffee they order, but it's better as the coffee we have in the Eindhoven office ;)

@nobleweb @MitchellJetten @carine what is you fav way of making coffee? I love to use a moka pot when I'm at home (you can see in the bg of the 2nd picture). How about you all?

@nobleweb @MitchellJetten It's true...totally obsessed myself. You don't want to spend a day with me if I haven't had my morning cup.

@carine mee too
February 15, 2013, 1:56 pm
