A fascinating 4-piece puzzle with 2 identical pieces and 2 identical mirror images which interlocks into a tetrahedron. This is the metal version of "Stan's Tetrahedron" at http://www.shapeways.com/model/53194/stan_s_tetrahedron.html It fits nicely out of the box, although the fit is a bit looser than in the plastic (WSF) version of the same puzzle. Update Mar 15 2010: the new version has no holes visible when assembled. Sphere diameter: 12mm.

Only a few copies of this puzzle have been printed.  It is quite expensive and I am not sure if the tolerances in metal are good enough to reproduce it reliably.

The walls are only 1mm. This printed fine, I imagine the special shape of spheres helps to stabilize them.

I will work on a new design where all holes are hidden after the puzzle is assembled. It may actually be cheaper due to hollowing out the connectors. I will have to print a prototype to be sure the connectors are not too thin. Also it may take a few months as I am busy with other things right now.

In fact there are SIX holes in each sphere, which is more than necessary. They are also square holes, and are part of the design. I agree the puzzle would look much different without the holes. It would be possible to arrange things so that when the puzzle was assembled, no holes would be visible, except for maybe the 4 spheres in the corners.

How about putting the holes near the connections on the spheres, making the spheres more perfect and hiding the holes in the crannies? It's such a great puzzle and an otherwise beautiful rendering. However, the holes are right now positioned prominently as if they are features; in fact, they are sadly necessary for cost reasons.
