I originally used a molecular modeling package (Hyperchem, then Nanoengineer-1) to place and bond 216 carbon atoms into roughly this shape. It then optimized the position of all the atoms to get exactly this shape. I then exported it, and imported it into another package that converted it into two meshes of triangles (the spheres and the cigars). Imported the result into Blender, added a subdivision surface modifier to both, then Boolean unioned the two to get the final shape. 750,000 triangles. Why do you ask? You looking to do something similar?
