About this Product

[Note: This propeller propulsion add-on does not include a 3D printed Strandbeest, which should be bought seperately! This propeller only fits the PARVUS!]

Theo Jansen’s 3D printed Strandbeest continues to evolve with the addition of a Propeller Propulsion system! The 3D printed Strandbeests can now walk autonomously, powered by the wind, just like Theo's full-scale Strandbeests. The new propeller add-on gives new and existing owners of these kinetic sculptures a new way to set them in motion!

The propeller addition is available as a separate kit, which can be mounted on the 3D printed Strandbeests. The propeller is compatible with the various evolutions of the Strandbeest, so existing owners of the “AGP” 5 and 7 model Strandbeests can use it as well. Consisting of 5 main parts, it can be mounted on the Strandbeest body in a few simple steps.
Also see our videos of the Strandbeest Propulsion in action, and the video with mounting instructions.

The 3D printed Strandbeest is sold separately.

A few tips to consider:

- Please look at our instruction video on mounting the Propeller Propulsion add-on, here.

- After mounting the Propeller Propulsion add-on it is best left mounted. Frequent dis-assembly can wear down the material which can result in play on the mechanism.

I would like to see a VAWT savonius rotor power source for that device so that it will be insensitive to wind direction. good looking too.

Update: It all works, as it turns out. The shaft doesn't fit into the propellor exactly as seen on the video - it sticks out a little farther - and yet everything works fine! The cogs connect and the propellor makes it walk. You do really need one of those little battery-operated handheld fans to make it work properly, as Stephen Fry demonstrated on TV.

PS That's "propeller." (Friends have a design studio called Propellor, hence the spelling confusion.) Anyway, I can provide photos of what's going on with the propeller shaft connection, if Shapeways or others are interested.

@leadingzero Mine arrived intact and all seems fine, with the exception that the shaft that is meant to fit into the propellor is too fat, and I can't slide it on the whole way - the receptacle on the propellor appears stretched out of shape if I push the shaft in too far. And if I leave it half inserted, the shaft doesn't sit straight (and looks precarious). Problem would be solved by refining the +-shaped end of the shaft down, so that its four wings actually fit into the receptacle.

Mine arrived. A few issues that should be revised: 1. The shaft between the main axle and gear arrived snapped right at the joining. What's the best way to glue "white strong and flexible"? 2. The keys and holes printed a bit fat, such that the keys are too large for the holes and the holes are too small for the keys. Recommendations for removing material without breaking the part would be appreciated. I'm afraid to send my rotary tool at it, and even more afraid to use my fat sausage fingers to sand it down. All in all a cool concept and execution, but best in a display case versus on the desk, methinks.
